A wave of more than 630 wildfires has spread throughout Israel in recent days, injuring 180 people and burning down 560 homes. Nearly 100,000 Israelis have been evacuated; in Haifa, hundreds of apartments were destroyed completely, leaving more than 1,000 people without homes. Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority reported that more than 4,900 acres of forests, brushland and open space were burnt, the largest amount since the Mount Carmel forest fire in 2010. In many places, essential services such as electricity and train lines have been interrupted.
