The Jewish Communal Fund (JCF), an independent public charity that facilitates charitable giving for more than 6,000 fund holders through a popular giving vehicle known as a donor advised fund, has been designated a “Top 50” Charity in the United States by the Chronicle of Philanthropy on its just published “Philanthropy 400” list. The “Philanthropy 400” is an annual listing of the nation’s largest nonprofit groups based upon the amount of money raised over a 12-month period.
At No. 48, Jewish Communal Fund is the highest ranking Jewish organization on the list. JCF’s generous fund holders contributed nearly $360 million in fiscal year 2013, a 67.3 percent increase from 2012.
“The stock market gains in 2013 enabled many of our donors to increase their grant-making capabilities by making significant gifts of appreciated securities to Jewish Communal Fund,” said Susan F. Dickman, Executive Vice President & CEO of JCF. “We are even prouder of the fact that last year, Jewish Communal Fund distributed grants to 7,000 charities– totaling $272 million. This represents more than a quarter of total assets.”
According to the Chronicle, giving to donor advised funds (DAFs), including Jewish Communal Fund, continues to be on the rise. The percentage gains seen by DAFs have surpassed those of large, established nonprofits like the United Way and the Salvation Army. Overall, giving to the charities on the list grew by more than 10 percent.
